Unless specified in the ride details below, all rides will start from outside the front of St Mary’s Flower Park on Bury New Road [ MAP! ] . Rides will end back in Prestwich where we usually have an optional post ride “refuel” at a pub/cafe.

We run two “categories” of rides but we don’t do the usual “A,B or C” stuff. They are our ‘Standard Ride’ (“Stn” in the Category section on the rides list) (around 30-40 miles with hills | pretty hard) and our ‘Big Ride’ (“Big” in the Category section on the rides list(approx 50-60miles plus, loads of hills & hard). The big rides will be slightly smaller in the winter months of December, January and February – more akin to the Standard rides. If you’re unsure on your fitness or worried about the bigger distances, then come down and join us for one of our ‘Standard’ rides first and see what you think.

‘Standard’ rides don’t usually have a cafe stop halfway round (unless the mood really takes us) but we always stop for lunch/snack on the ‘Big’ rides.

We also create events for each of our rides over on Facebook. You can find the events on our Facebook page.

Please check here, our Facebook or Twitter channels periodically, and especially the day of the ride, to ensure nothing has changed. We sometimes have to make weather enforced changes to start times or in extremes may even have to cancel rides.

N.B. All our routes are free for anyone to use but if you are a club or group and use one of our routes exactly as is then please give a nod that we actually devised the route. We take a lot of time and put a lot of effort to create all our routes from scratch and take a lot of pride in doing so.

2017 October Winter Ride  – Bury New & Old Roads – Saturday 14th October **9AM**

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/25724205
Distance: 40 miles
Elevation: 3,000ft
Moving time: Approx 3 hours –  3.5 hours // Total Time approx 3.5 – 4 Hours.(very approximate dependent on rider pace and general stops – allows for brief stops/traffic.)
Start: 09:00 at St Mary’s Flower Park, Prestwich
Post Ride: Same Yet Inn, Simister – arrive approx. 12:30 – 13:00

A route going to the North into our sometimes forgotten Bury surrounds. Some familiar roads in here but, amazingly, found a few little surprises that are thrown in here and roads I’ve never seen. Some of them are hills, naturally.

Hopefully everyone likes the little roads we’ve found. Should be a good one to kick off the winter rides!

Post ride at Same Yet inn. Ride ends there, so please be familiar with your route home from there.

2017 October Winter Ride – The Good North – Sunday 29th October **9AM**

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/24219353
Distance: 45 miles
Elevation: 3,300ft
Moving time: Approx 3.25 hours – 3.75 hours // Total Time approx 3.75 – 4.25 Hours.(very approximate dependent on rider pace and general stops – allows for brief stops/traffic.)
Start: 09:00 at St Mary’s Flower Park, Prestwich
Post Ride: Parkfield Inn, Whitefield – arrive approx. 12:45 – 13:15

As mentioned in our previous October ride, we sometimes neglect our Northern territories. So we’re doubling down our northern escapades and returning again to those blustery, beautiful moors.

Rob’s got a great route that takes us to our old friend Pickup Bank. for any of you who havent done it yet, I can’t wait for you to see this one. A real little grueler, just when you think you’re done, you’re not! A true heartbreaker.

The rest of the route is just as good. At best part of 45 miles and 3,300ft , this one should keep you plenty warm in winter. Bring your climbing legs and some grit, it’ll all be worth it at the end.

Ride finishes at Parkfield Inn, Whitefield. An old AP fave and a great winter boozer. Please make yourself familiar with your way home from here.

2017 Winter Ride – High Brows – Sat 11 Nov 9am

Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/25800809
Distance: 46 miles
Elevation: 3,400ft
Moving time: Approx 3.5 hours – 4 hours // Total Time approx 4 – 4.5 Hours.(very approximate dependent on rider pace and general stops – allows for brief stops/traffic.)
Start: 09:00 at St Mary’s Flower Park, Prestwich
Post Ride: Woodthorpe Pub, Prestwich– arrive approx. 13:00 – 13:30

November’s winter ride takes us on a classic up hill and down dale AP ride. As you look at the map profile, there’s 4 noticable lumps in our way.

The first comes at around 10 miles in and is Buckstones Road going up over Crompton Fold. Surprisingly (to me), this takes us to the highest point of our ride today. Note, highest point, it doesn’t mean steepest. That’s to come later.

After that climb, we descend down Grains Road, pretty darn quickly for a couple of miles. We then have some flat-ish, read: undulating, riding as we head south, skirting the edge of the Peak Dsitrict for the next 6 or 7 miles before we begin the climb from Stalybridge to Mottram. It climbs around 400ft or so in just over a mile, so you’ll definitely know it’s a hill. It’s fun to ride down, so that tells you all you need to know.

We then continue with a nice descent into Broadbottom before a swine of a hill that comes out of it, Long Road. It’s only a mile climb, so don’t be too fooled by its name.

The route picks up some nice quiet roads off the A626 for a couple of miles before rejoining it briefly to pick up the road to our final climb and the jewel in today’s crown: werneth low. This son of a gun is steep, so find your own rhythm and hold on til the top.

It’s then a very flat trek back up North to Prestwich where we will stop off at Woodthorpe pub for post ride refreshments.

    1. Hi Michael,
You just show up to a ride. No membership or anything required. Have a read of the ride info at the bottom of each ride description and that’s it.
We’re on Facebook and have events on there too if you want to join on there.
Will you be coming to on this weekend’s ride?
Keep posted on the site for weather info.
      Cheers

  1. Hi, I will be joining you on Sunday morning for the first time if thanks ok? I believe you spoke to my friend Rick McGrath today or yesterday.
I’m familiar with the route and climbs so won’t be a hindrance.
I live in Whitefield so not too far away.

    1. Hi Phill,

Yeah, Rick and I have been in contact this week. Will be great to have you both down.
Just keep your eyes peeled on the site, especially on the day of the ride, just to check that nothing changes (time/ride going ahead etc.) as obviosuly everything is weather dependent this time of year.
That said, highly likely we’ll be out on at least one of the routes posted for Sunday.

Any problems, just give me a shout.

      Cheers,
      Craig
