I’ll start out with the customary big ride disclaimer, as it’s important for these big rides. : our big rides are not for the fainthearted and they are really hilly, tough but ultimately enjoyable rides. We have a lunch stop but they are longer, hillier and slightly faster than our standard rides. If you’re unsure then please speak to us and come to a standard ride first. We’re not ones to be too specific about speed but ideally shouldn’t be much slower than around 12mph average around this sort of course, as otherwise they just take way too long and it’ll be a real tough day in the saddle.

Words from Mark Leigh

A fine re-imagining of the Reg Harris classis. Whilst the leitmotif from the original is retained; expansions and improvements to the melody are applied to achieve the much sought ‘AP Long’ accreditation.

Familiar pretty paths are trodden out to Hoddlesden, but then the new fun begins. A great loop north keeping the Hoghton and Darwen Towers in sight on the left; skirting Blackburn, up to Salmesbury via Feniscowles, Pleasington and Osbaldeston over narrow yet pleasingly traffic light lanes. We turn south then; back via Roach Bridge, Hoghton and a spot of lunch perhaps at The Royal Arms on the 43 mile mark, with all the substantial climbing complete.

We return over familiar lanes for the mostly downhill run to home.

Special thanks to former Blackburn resident John Merrill for the detail and the advance party of Pete and Fliss for the scouting mission.
